Hot along Southwest border line

Recently, the authorities have constantly discovered and handled many cases of illegal transportation of drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam across the Southwest border. On the morning of June 15, 2020, an entire large-scale transnational drug line was destroyed by the An Giang Border Guard in collaboration with the Southern Border Task Force and 31kg of drugs and thousands of synthetic drug tablets and nine offenders were arrested.

The above-mentioned drugs were seized by the authorities in the border area between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Previously, the border guard station of BinhHiep international border gate had presided over and coordinated with other forces in the area to arrest an offender carrying military weapons and drugs in the landmark area 209.1 (2) in Tam Duong village, BinhHiep commune, KienTuong town, Long An. Seized goods includedthree guns and 20.8kg of drugs.

Recently, expanding the investigation, authorities arrested six other offenders from this drug line, including two Vietnamese and four Cambodians.

In addition to the border road, drug transportation by air in the South is also a problem. On June 16, 2020, deploying the TE220 project, the Drug Control and Prevention Team and the Express Customs Branch - Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department in collaboration with Team 6 –the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department under the General Department of Customs and PC04 under Ho Chi Minh City Public Security inspected and seized more than 9kg of MDMA synthetic drugs (ecstasy) sent from Europe to Ho Chi Minh City.

The number of drug cases increased sharply

According to the Investigation Police Department on Drug-related Crimes under the Ministry of Public Security, together with the dangerous developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, the situation of drug crimes has tended to increase. The number of drug-law violations and the number of arrested offenders in the first six months of 2020 increased by 9.46% compared to the same period in 2019. However, the major drug cases which were discovered were small, while activities of transnational drug crimes with foreign factors fell.

Due to direct impacts from the global situation and regional drug crimes, the situation of drugs in our country continues to be complicated.Drugs are mainly traded and transported to Vietnam for consumption or for transit to a third country via land, sea and air routes.

On the Vietnam-Laos border, the situation of trafficking and illegal transportation of drugs increases sharply because of the illegal production and trading of drugs from the "Golden Triangle" areainto Vietnam. On the Vietnam - China route, drugs are mainly heroin, traded and transported from abroad to Vietnam and then transported to China.

On June 15, in Muong Gan commune, Thuan Chau district (Son La province), Team 5 presided over and coordinated with the Investigation Police Department on Drug-related Crimes - PC04 (Son La Provincial Public Security), DrugControl and Prevention Team (Dien Bien Customs Department), Thuan Chau District Police (Son La), Son La Border Guard to successfully deal with a large drug project, arresting one offender and seizing 17 packages of heroin.

Recently, because authorities of Vietnam and China have strengthened their coordination in propaganda, assault and suppression, trafficking and illegal transportation of synthetic drugs from China to Vietnam has decreased but always has potential risks.
